What Is a Private Safari in Tanzania?

A private safari gives your party exclusive use of a 4×4 safari vehicle and a dedicated driver-guide for the whole trip. You are not sharing with strangers, and the itinerary is built around your schedule, your interests and your choice of accommodation.

You decide when to leave camp in the morning, how long to stay with a lion sighting, whether to return for lunch or take a picnic, and which parks to prioritise. The guide works for you, not for a group vote.

This format suits couples, families, photographers, honeymooners and anyone who values flexibility and privacy. It is also the standard way local operators in Arusha build tailor-made safaris.

Private does not mean luxury. You can run a private safari with budget camping or mid-range lodges. The privacy is in the vehicle and the guide, not in the thread count of your sheets.

Private Safari vs Group Safari

This is the biggest decision in safari planning. It shapes your cost, comfort and daily rhythm more than the choice of park.

FactorPrivate safariGroup safari
Vehicle Exclusive 4×4 for your party Shared with other travellers
Guide Dedicated, personal driver-guide Shared guide managing the group
Schedule Flexible, you decide Fixed, set by the operator
Accommodation Your choice, any tier Pre-selected by the operator
Cost per person Higher, you cover the whole vehicle Lower, the vehicle cost is split
Best for Couples, families, photographers, honeymooners Solo travellers and budget-focused groups

When private makes sense: if you are two or more travellers, value flexibility, or are marking a special occasion. For a couple, the gap between a private mid-range safari and a group departure is often smaller than people expect. If you would rather share the cost, see our group joining safaris.

What a Private Safari Costs

Private safari prices in Tanzania fall into four broad tiers. These are typical market planning ranges per person per day on the ground, excluding international flights. They are not our quotes: your exact price depends on season, group size, parks and accommodation.

Budget private

$250 to $400 per person per day

Private vehicle with camping or basic lodges and shared facilities. The most affordable way to go private.

Mid-range private

$400 to $700 per person per day

Private vehicle with comfortable tented camps and lodges with en-suite rooms. The sweet spot for most travellers.

Premium private

$700 to $1,200 per person per day

Luxury tented camps, private conservancy access, senior guides and finer dining.

Ultra-luxury private

$1,200 to $2,500+ per person per day

Exclusive-use camps, fly-in logistics and a very high level of personal service.

Watch the headline quote. A very low daily rate often leaves out park fees, guide wages or vehicle costs, which can add 40 to 60% later. Always ask for an itemised quote that lists park fees for your exact itinerary.

Park fees are fixed. They are set by the government and are the same for every visitor, whichever operator you book with. They are often the largest single cost on a Northern Circuit safari, and sleeping inside a park adds a concession fee on top of the room rate.

Which Parks for Which Experience

Tanzania's parks are not interchangeable. Each delivers a different kind of safari, and the right mix depends on your priorities and your time.

Serengeti National Park

Iconic plains

Vast plains, woodlands and kopjes, home to the Great Migration and some of the best big cat viewing in Africa. Choose it for scale and predators.

Ngorongoro Crater

Compact and rich

A volcanic caldera with a very high density of wildlife and one of the best chances of seeing black rhino. Choose it for a high-impact day.

Tarangire National Park

Elephants and baobabs

Large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees close to Arusha. A strong first or last game-drive day, and quieter than the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara National Park

Short stop

A compact park known for flamingos, tree-climbing lions and groundwater forest. Best as a half-day or transit stop.

Ruaha National Park

Remote south

Wild and far less visited, with big elephant herds, wild dogs and baobab landscapes. Usually reached by small plane.

Nyerere National Park

Boat and walking safaris

One of Africa's largest protected areas, with boat safaris on the Rufiji River and walking safaris. A slower, water-based rhythm.

The classic first-timer loop: Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. It delivers the migration, the crater and the elephants in one logical, road-friendly circuit. Add Lake Manyara only for a gentle transit day or if you love birds. Read more on our park pages.

Best Time for a Private Safari

Tanzania works all year, but the experience changes with the seasons. There is no single best month, only the best month for what you want to see.

SeasonBest forTrade-offs
Late June to October (dry season) The best overall wildlife viewing and the Mara River crossings Peak demand, higher prices and busier parks
Late January to March (calving season) Wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti and lots of predator action Some rain, but green and lush landscapes
April to May (long rains) Lowest prices, lush scenery, birdlife and solitude Some difficult roads, some camps closed and heavy showers
November to December (short rains) Good value and dramatic skies Short afternoon showers and variable roads

A private vehicle helps in the green season. Your guide can steer around the worst roads and weather, so you can still see outstanding wildlife while everyone else waits for the dry season.

Sample Private Safari Itineraries

These are frameworks, not fixed packages. A private safari is adjusted to your pace, interests and budget.

7-Day Classic Northern Circuit 7 days

Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara

The standard first-timer shape: a night in Tarangire for elephants and baobabs, three nights in the Serengeti for depth, a night near Ngorongoro for the crater descent and a transit stop at Lake Manyara before returning to Arusha.

10-Day Safari and Zanzibar 10 days

Northern Circuit, then Zanzibar

Five to seven days of safari followed by three to five days of beach time. One trip rather than two, and a popular choice for honeymoons and families.

10-Day North and Remote South 10 days

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, then fly to Ruaha or Nyerere

The classic north combined with a remote southern extension. Suits repeat visitors and photographers who want solitude.

How many days? Under five days feels rushed on the Northern Circuit. Seven is the sweet spot for depth without fatigue. Ten or more opens up the south, Zanzibar, or a slower pace.

How to Choose a Private Safari Operator

Tanzania has hundreds of registered operators, and the difference between a good one and a poor one shows up in the paperwork, the vehicle and the quote, not in the photos.

  • Ask for a valid TALA tour operator licence and a TTLB tourism business licence, and check the numbers.
  • Check any trade association membership (such as TATO) on the association's own website.
  • Ask for a photo of the exact vehicle: a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a working pop-up roof and a window seat for everyone.
  • Your guide should be a licensed Tanzanian guide with first-aid training. Foreign tour leaders cannot replace a licensed guide on game drives.
  • Expect to pay a deposit by card or bank transfer. Be wary of operators who ask for cash only or Western Union.
  • Insist on an itemised quote: park fees, guide, vehicle, accommodation, meals and transfers on separate lines.

The cheapest quote is rarely the best deal. Ask what is not included before you compare totals.

Private Safari FAQ

What is a private safari in Tanzania?

A private safari gives your party exclusive use of a 4×4 vehicle and a dedicated driver-guide, with an itinerary and accommodation chosen around you.

How much does a private safari cost?

Typical ranges are about $250 to $400 per person per day at the budget end, $400 to $700 mid-range, $700 to $1,200 premium and $1,200 or more for ultra-luxury, excluding international flights. Ask for an itemised quote for exact figures.

Is a private safari better than a group safari?

It depends on your priorities. Private offers flexibility, privacy and a personal guide, while a group safari is cheaper per person but follows a fixed schedule in a shared vehicle.

Are park fees included in the price?

They should be, but check. Park fees are set by the government and are the same for every operator, so ask for them to be listed separately for your itinerary.

When is the best time to go?

Late June to October is prime for dry-season wildlife and Mara River crossings, January to March is calving season, and April, May and November are quieter and cheaper with some rain.

How many days do I need?

Seven days is the sweet spot for the Northern Circuit. Fewer than five feels rushed, and ten or more lets you add the south or Zanzibar.

Should I tip my guide?

Tipping is customary but not mandatory. A common guideline for a private driver-guide is $15 to $25 per person per day, handed over in cash at the end of the trip.

How far ahead should I book?

For June to October, book six to twelve months ahead, especially for specific camps. For the rest of the year, three to six months is usually enough.
